Journalistic Photography - The History

Bill Stockwell singlehandedly, without outside inspiration or guidance from peers or photo cults, completely changed the face of wedding photography worldwide.” What a brash, self important egomaniac this jerk must be” you may mutter to yourself.” But I’m speaking of my Dad, Bill Sr. Before he came along, wedding photography consisted of a drab series of family groups, sterile formals and worse, cornball jokes such as the bride holding a ball and chain or the grooms trying to flee the church restrained by the best man. What a riot! Though his photography never sank to those depths, his creative soul could no longer bear delivering sterile statistics. He said to himself, “I can’t do this anymore. Either change or go back to writing sports for the local newspaper.”

While he was scrawling notes, ideating new concepts and developing a revolutionary style, I was sprouting acne, fantasizing about the rest of the story click here

Leigh and Brandon

Photobucket

Leigh and Brandon, who are getting married on Maui next year, were a lot of fun to photograph. Their first task was to check out all the different venues and decide on the one that fits their personalities best.

Julie and Anthony

Photobucket
Julie and Anthony have visited the Old Lahaina Luau on several of their trips here and were thrilled to find out that they could have their wedding there, as well. Gabi and Sandy, the coordinators, are very thorough and love what they do....and it shows. Another plus, a great beach is just a few minutes away, so we were whisked there and spent about fifteen minutes on Baby Beach. For a small group who wants to experience a great luau and a wedding, all in one location, it is hard to beat. The couple lives near Sacramento and having come from the SF Bay area we had a lot in common. It didn't hurt that Julie had a ton of personality and cute little freckles. Anthony realized that he was simply a prop and did his job very well. He's the one with the goatee.

Jo and Kenny

Photobucket
Jo and Kenny of Dallas were a blast to photograph ! Kelly Miller, of A Perfect Paradise Wedding, brought the event together and everything was perfect. Jamie Lawrence, one of the best musicians on the island, provided the music, and the couple rented a vintage T-Bird to complete the picture. When they pulled up in their Bird I said, Whoa, Bruce Willis. A younger version to be sure. Although it was our one hour package, really plenty for two people, they had over 250 pictures to choose from.

Debi & Sean

Photobucket

Debi and Sean, from Dallas chose Mama's Fish House for their wedding. Amazing food in tropical surroundings make it a very popular wedding location and all thirty guests had a great time, as did I. It was a very lively, fun group. Gwen of Floral Designs Maui created elegant and tasteful flower arrangements and bouquets.

Kirsten & Matthew

Kirsten and Matthew said "Our big day finally came and was POSITIVELY wonderful! Everyone was so kind and helpful, our families were so happy and everything was more beautiful than I ever could possibly imagine! All of the magazine photos I poured over for months came alive and was the simple elegance I dreamed of. It was a delight to meet Bill, he was so kind and I felt so at ease getting my picture taken under his care! I am usually so nervous around a camera....I can't wait to see the pictures of what truly was the best day of my life....so far!"

Kristine and John

Scott and I had a great time with Kristine and John. They were married at the Seawatch in Wailea. a very popular venue with wonderful panoramic views.

They opted to do their beach photos the day following their wedding so they could thoroughly enjoy the experience, worry-free from trashing the dress and tux.

Kristine and John are both school teachers, residing in Mesa, AZ. A super nice couple with loving chemistry. We always consider it a supreme privilege to be a part of their experience here in Maui.
